After consulting with my executive board (otherwise known as my wallet, my confidence and my resume), I have decided to take a voice over workshop with one of the best intructors in the Boston area. The name of the workshop is simply called “Voice-Over Workshop with Wren Ross” but I am referring to it as ”How To Help Scott Not Suck in Not Too Many Steps”. Now granted, I have taken a workshop in the past but for some reason feel like I am missing a few peices. Like how to be good at it, or relax, or be in the moment, or not overthink, or get distracted, or worry about booking it while auditioning, or have it sound natural, or have enough energy or pretty much how to be good enough to be good enough to get the gig. Ya know, simple stuff.

Apparently my holiday weekend has started early since Friday was all about NOT receiving phone calls, not jockying my scheudule nor booking voice over gigs from the previously mentioned voice over auditions. Oh well. There are much more important things to remember this Memorial Day Weekend than grabbing a voice over gig. Off to work the full-time job this weekend and see what we can put together for next week.

This has never actually happened…at least not like this. Three voice over auditions in one day, actually all before 1:00 in the afternoon. I know it might not sound that amazing but for a person who seems to have the hardest time getting a voice over job, to get three v/o auditions in one day, let alone week, month or quarter is pretty spectacular. What did they include? The first was a really conversational piece for a software company. The second, a fun read for a local college TV spot and the third was for……….wait for it……..CONDOMS. Yup, a new style of rubber is coming out on the market and I just may be the voice of it…the ad that is, not the condom. But if it could talk….that I will keep for my stand-up! It is one thing to go zero for three on auditions when they are spread out over some time. To go zero for three in one day would be a new level of failure not yet experienced by The Unknown Guy. Frankly I think it would be super fun to do one spot incorporating all three.

A few months ago I auditioned for the role of a fisherman in a regional union commercial for The 99 Restaurant and actually got put on first refusal (aka possibly, hold your breath, almost or sorry but no). This time, it was much easier…the role was of hungry guy fantasizing about food when his wife or girlfriend walks in. Considering I’ve done that plenty more times that fishing, we’ll see if I end up making it further. Ya know, like actually getting it!

Today, it was out to the headquarters for Bose to bang out some voice over work for one of their upcoming products. I also got to see the final cut of one of the videos I filmed (and managed to not screw up) last month. So one hour in the booth, a bunch of guidance, a whole lotta takes and 4 recordings were in the can…or computer, or wherever it is they go. Then it was off to Boston Casting for a Raytheon audition. After stuffing myself in my business casual attire and reviewing the script, it was in to the anxiety chamber for a couple of rounds with the director. Feedback from them was “really good job” which I have learned means absolutely nothing. Feedback from myself was “that actually felt pretty damn good” which I have learned means just about the same. We’ll see what happens but a fun day of not sucking at the creative stuff.

A few weeks ago, me and my dirty blond mop rocked out an audition for the popular insecurity-busting hair coloring product “Just for Men”. After doing a good enough job to earn a spot on their short list, in the end, it was apparently mediocre enough to not get it. I am pretty sure my skill-set and hair are still fighting over who was to blame. I did however get picked to bang out some extra work on the shoot and actually pulled off a long-but really-good day (as extra work goes). Working with Picture Park, a Boston / NYC based production company always means great things. Also, I was able to speak with and get some really solid advice from some Orlando, Miami and NYC based talent. Talent with not only more experience and skill but some freakishly good hair. Damn!

All I am going to say is that today I went in for a union audition for Gillette. The script was great, the setup was great….I was not! I am 99 – 99.9% sure I completely screwed the pooch on it. Since the commercial had nothing to do with screwing or pooches, I am certain the only thing I am gonna to hear from that one is the sound of my phone not ringing. I did get a call from the neighbors dog today…is that weird?

Another example of Scott’s print work ability as I crushed out the role of “guy in front row”. It was actually a lot of fun doing this one….about an hour and a half banging on plexi glass, sipping on juice and making sure the camera never saw my face. Felt good! Don’t worry if you don’t recognize me…I had a hard time and I know me.

Not a ton to talk about. Remember those three auditions I had a couple of weeks ago? Yeah, nothing! I did however get a call to bang out a video for Staples, playing the role of a manager explaining benefits to new employees. It was a half day shoot, 4 different full takes and about five pages worth of copy off of a teleprompter. Pretty easy project, quick shoot, great experience on the TP!

This weekend brings the seasonal weather in Boston of 60 degrees and sunny. So Saturdays challenge will involve seeing just how long I can run around the Charles River for. Unlike the other day when it was 90 degrees, I might actually plan ahead and do crazy things like eat and be hydrated enough so that my body doesn’t feel like folding in half as I reach the Science Museum (dreaded very far side of the loop). Sunday’s challenge will be for something totally different! It’ll be about auditioning for and trying to finally get a high(er) paying print job…commonly referred to in my own head as “actually paying my bills on time and not having debt-induced spirit-crushing anxiety to the point where I jam my head in to and eat my way out of a gallon of ice cream to feel better”.
